At the site of this abandoned & dilapidated coal preparation plant was situated the first labour camp of Vorkuta, the remote city well above the Arctic Circle at Komi republic in northern Russia. The first coal mine where prisoners worked was also, incidentally, at the same area. It began operating at the early 1930s and was used with little improvements for decades. Later on the coal processing plant was built near the camp. It was abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union and stands now as an unintended memorial for the prison camp.
